Behind the Scenes of "Sunrise Under the Brooklyn Bridge"

When I heard about this mysterious piano that washed up ashore under the Brooklyn Bridge, I immediately rode my bike down from my upper west side studio to check it out for myself. I went directly under the overhang and there it sat in all it's beauty what I can only describe as a breathing, living piano. The spectacle of this abandoned piano inspired me. I'd never seen anything like it. I knew exactly who I needed to photograph on it. I called my good friend Misty Copeland, who happens to be one of the great ballerinas today. She is the third ever African American soloist ballerina from the American Ballet Theater, and the first in the last two decades.

We met up around 5:30 am alongside my assistant Abdul Kircher and my creative director Daniela Vesco, who filmed the behind the scenes footage. We shot for about an hour as the sun pierced through the east and created this beautiful and memorable series, which has quickly become one of my personal favorites.
