On October 25 2014 I attended the Jazz Memorial Tribute to ‘Little’ Jimmy Scott at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, NYC. I was invited by a friend who was one of many singers and musicians who honoured Jimmy's life through song. When I entered the Church I was not sure what to expect, but I can say that only a few steps into this sanctuary I felt a tactile, visceral and emotional chill. Although a stranger to all except one or two of the attendees, I felt a need to get as close to the pulpit where the acclaimed, Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts III would officiate. Dozens of Musicians would perform and others would reflect on a life I was to learn so much about that afternoon. The ricochet of voices heard throughout the Church was dumbfounding, as legendary voice after voice left everyone with chills up their spines and smiles in their hearts. Reflecting on Jimmy's life, all spoke in some way of his kindness, his concern for others, and his reverence for lyrics – singing a story and moving an audience like no other.

During this tribute, I knew that somehow I would become involved with preserving the history of what I was witnessing – America's classical music: jazz and blues. Although over the years I have photographed some of the greats in this community – Dexter Gordon, Willie Dixon and Wynton Marsalis – I had a feeling there was much more left to explore.
